00Spike summary

Spike is a 2 g defense Bit.

Spike accumulates many disadvantages and few practical applications, but it can serve as a testing tool to find the perfect balance of your combinations. Outside of that purpose, there are much more reliable options in all playstyles.

01Description

Spike is a tiny sharp tip with a wider angle than Needle, but with a very short extension. The transition between the tip and the gear is abrupt, generating marked and sharp corners on the teeth.

02General properties

Thanks to its reduced size and extreme sharpness, it can achieve good spin times when it stays completely stable. However, its balance is incredibly fragile: any imbalance causes the Bey to wobble and over-tilt, making it super easy to destabilize.

It completely lacks lateral support, so it is ridiculously easy to push, and every drop costs it a great amount of energy, especially if the unusually marked edges of the gear scrape the ground or the rail, rendering it ineffective in defense.

It is one of the Bits that tilt the most, so it can be used experimentally to force contact against the Ratchet, take advantage of the entire top part of the Blade, or attempt smashing attacks. Even so, this leaves it mega vulnerable on the flanks.

Its best application is in staying perfectly in the center, where it can return energy to the rival by bouncing easily, although in that role Wedge turns out to be more reliable.

In pure defense, any version of Needle surpasses it; in stamina, all Balls are better. Its only remarkable feature is its extreme sensitivity, which makes it useful to adjust the balance of a combo, since it clearly reveals any misalignment or imbalance.

It should be noted that it wears down over time, which would slightly improve its stamina in battle but without really mitigating its problems in battle. In that case, it would no longer be as reliable for perfect balance and you would have to replace it with a new, sharp one.

Why does it work this way? Blader's Path explains it step by step: Bey physics, how to build combos and how to test them. See the book
