00Gear Needle summary

Gear Needle is a 2 g defense Bit.

Gear Needle corrects some risks of the original Needle, but at the cost of a lot of energy. Although it offers acceptable stability, there are much more reliable alternatives. So it is a curious part, but without a remarkable function compared to the available alternatives.

01Description

A hill-shaped Bit that protrudes directly from the gear, which sits lower than usual to facilitate taking the Xtreme Dashes.

02General properties

In practice, curiously, it usually doesn't take the rails that frequently, since the gears act more like brakes that scrape the ground when the Bey is pushed, preventing it from reaching the rail. This provides effective defense against KOs. Although at the cost of consuming a lot of energy with each contact due to the friction generated by the toothed shape of the gear.

Under Needle has similar defense but with fewer stamina compromises since:

  • > Under Needle has a smooth ring for support that conserves energy better, while Gear scrapes directly with the gear teeth generating greater friction and wear.
  • > Gear's edge protrudes more, so it needs a greater tilt for the support to go into action, or to be pushed further until touching the stadium's curvature, leaving it more vulnerable during the process.
  • > Under is lower and more stable; it doesn't expose the lower part of the Blade.

So for pure defense, Under offers much more consistent and safer results.

On the other hand, its tip is rounded and not pointy, which reduces the "shield defense" effect characteristic of Needle, since instead of digging into the ground, it tends to slide more easily. The advantage is that this same roundness gives it an intermediate behavior between Orb and Needle, recovering the upright position quickly and avoiding over-tilting.

So in the end its playstyle leans toward defending in an upright position, and although it is good at it, it loses so much energy that even aggressive Beys could drain it completely. While Hexa and Under Needle will achieve a similar style but much more consistent and safer.

Why does it work this way? Blader's Path explains it step by step: Bey physics, how to build combos and how to test them. See the book
