00BlackShell summary
Obsidian Shell (BlackShell by Takara Tomy) is a 32.5 g BX Blade, released in Japan on July 13, 2024.
BlackShell is the complete opposite of WizardRod: a design with everything going against it, yet it can still shine when chaos is on its side. It won’t dominate tournaments, but it can steal unexpected wins and a few laughs along the way. In other words, it’s like the green shell from Mario Kart: unpredictable, chaotic, and dangerous if it hits at the right moment.
01Mythology
It’s based on Genbu, the Black Tortoise with a serpent tail that guards the North, representing the earth element. This is a direct homage to Max’s Draciel from the classic series.
02Description
Its concave shape resembles a turtle shell, divided into eight angled protrusions in a star pattern that symbolize the animal’s head and legs. It’s a light Blade, with medium stamina and a noticeably small size.
03Performance
Its star-shaped design causes massive recoil since the protrusions are so exposed. The worst part is that its weight doesn’t give it the support needed to handle its own power, making it lose a ton of energy on every hit and turning it into an easy knockout. Pure attack is definitely not its strong suit.
Even though its shape could help it reach the Ratchets, it usually ends up getting crushed or hit right in its weakest spots. Because of that, using it as a shield-style defense just doesn’t work.
Stationary battles aren’t its thing either. Its spin time isn’t impressive, and it doesn’t generate enough Barrage effect to wear opponents down.
Its best option is to take advantage of the momentum when it gets sent flying to counter its rivals. Basically, you let it get hit so it can bounce back hard, or on counter tips, use the burst of speed to release that recoil like a projectile. But this takes a huge amount of force to get real results, so the launch has to be full power, or the recoil will completely overwhelm it.
Launching that hard and that often can be rough on your shoulder. Watch your posture, and only use full strength when it’s truly needed. If you’re planning to play for a while, try to pace yourself to avoid injury.
It’s worth noting that even with powerful launches, it’s still easy to knock out due to its light weight and high recoil.
From the first season, this is the Blade with the most drawbacks and the hardest one to get solid results from.
04Ways to use it
On tips with high traction and acceleration, like Gear Point, it looks to take the hit and bounce back hard to fire off a strong counter.
On more stationary tips, it waits for the impact, gets launched, bounces off the walls, and comes back with boosted momentum.
05Base combo

This combo tries to stick to the ground to avoid being knocked out, but that goes against the chaotic potential that actually benefits it. On top of that, the Ratchet hits the floor a lot, hurting its stamina even more. Because of this, it struggles badly and becomes an easy target to push around.
06Combos
Gear Point’s aggressiveness boosts the power of its counterattacks by improving traction, and it also lets you spin it up to high speed.
More focused on Counter Defense. It stays in the center waiting for the hit, then goes flying and comes back with a massive rebound boost. Ridiculous, but it works.
Why does it work this way?
